In September, we at Round Table 30 Salzburg once again had the opportunity to present the donations collected from our donation boxes to EB-Haus Austria at the Salzburg State Hospital. Through this ongoing initiative, we support medical care for people with epidermolysis bullosa—EB for short—and research into new treatment options.
Once again, our visit gave us the opportunity to learn more about the disease and the team’s work through a guided tour and a presentation. These insights move us anew every time and show just how much our collective support can make a difference.
EB is a rare, congenital disorder in which the adhesion between the layers of the skin is impaired. Even slight friction or pressure can cause blisters and open sores. Those affected are therefore also called “butterfly children”—although the disorder affects children as well as adults. Depending on its severity, the condition causes significant pain and limitations in daily life. For many, extensive wound care, special dressings, and clothing that is particularly gentle on the skin are part of daily life. Added to this are emotional stresses that also pose major challenges for family members.
The EB House, initiated by DEBRA Austria, brings together specialized medical care, research, clinical trials, and education and training under one roof. Day-to-day operations, including all personnel and operational costs, are made possible by donations. Every donation helps provide the best possible care for those affected and advances research toward relief and a cure.
A visit like this brings us back down to earth. It makes us realize how fragile good health is and leaves us with a deep respect for those affected, their families, and the dedicated team at the EB-Haus.
We are grateful to be able to support this important work and will continue to collect donations for the EB House through our donation boxes. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who makes room for our boxes and to everyone who fills them with contributions, big and small. Together, we can help.
