The idea of Round Table was born in England in 1927. The initiator was the young Rotarian Louis Marchesi from Norwich, who was concerned with the problems of the young generation of his time. The economic crises, high unemployment and social tensions of the 1920s meant that many young people were looking for guidance and prospects.

Marchesi didn’t just want to talk about it – he wanted to act. He brought together young men from different professions to take responsibility together, exchange ideas and actively contribute to society.

This is how the first Round Table came into being in 1927. The name refers to King Arthur’s legendary Round Table and symbolizes equality, open discussion and joint action.

A central guiding principle of Round Table was coined from the very beginning:

Adopt – Adapt – Improve
Adopt proven values, adapt them to the times and continuously improve them.

International development

The idea quickly spread across national borders. Numerous other clubs were established in Europe as early as the 1930s. After the Second World War, the network continued to grow internationally.

• 1935: already around 100 clubs
• 1936: first club on the European mainland (Denmark)
• 1952: first club in Germany
• 1956: Foundation of Round Table in Austria

Today, Round Table has thousands of members in numerous countries around the world who are committed to social projects and international understanding.

Round Table is not a party political organization. However, the Tablers should know the problems of their country and fulfill their civic duties. Round Table is not a secret society. Its activities are often echoed and recognized by the public. Round Table is non-denominational, Round Table is not anti-family, many events take place together with partners and children. Round Table is therefore not just a dinner club. There is no doubt that the shared meals and other social events serve to strengthen friendships and bonds. But this is only one part of Round Table. The other part is service to the community.
